What are you looking at? Give me your soul.
With eyes as red as those of the T-800 Terminator, these birds sure have a lot of red in them. The coloured pigments of carotenoids from blue-green algae, this bird’s main food source, provides an abundance of it, and applies the pink hue to its feathers, beak, legs, the eyes- pretty much everything.
In plants, carotenoids assist photosynthesis and acts as a sunblock to protect the vital chlorophyll elements from sun damage. While humans consume this coloured stuff in foods such as carrots and pumpkin, we do so at levels that aren’t quite enough to turn us orange or pink- although it is apparently possible.
Pink isn’t just a colour, they say. It’s an attitude. Just ask this bird.
